Modernising local government website

Find out more about plans for two new unitary councils for Bucks.

Head to our dedicated website for the latest information.

District councillors across Buckinghamshire voted on Monday 16 January in favour of submitting a proposal for two new unitary councils for Buckinghamshire, replacing the current two-tier structure of county and district councils, to the Secretary of State, Sajid Javid. We are currently awaiting his decision.

To modernising local government in Buckinghamshire, we created this proposal in partnership with Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern and Wycombe District Councils.

The proposed model would see one unitary council in Aylesbury Vale, and one for the south of the county. This would replace the current county and district councils.

Our proposal

A two-unitary model for Bucks

A two-unitary model for Bucks:

  • strengthens local decision making

  • improves and protects the future of local services

  • saves taxpayers' money

  • keeps our customers at the centre of everything we do

We don't believe that change is about seeking short term gains. We need solutions that provide a solid foundation for any future challenges and which will benefit our children's children.

We believe that any changes needs to be introduced through a measured, considered and collaborative approach.

We believe we have the best option for the future of local government in Bucks.
