The referendum took place across the nation on 5 May 2011. Voters were asked if they wish to “adopt the alternative vote system instead of the current ‘first past the post’ system for electing MPs.”

The coalition government is also proposing to reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600. The proposals are outlined in the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act.

Under the alternative vote system voters rank candidates in their constituency in order of preference. Any candidate receiving more then 50% of the vote in the first round is elected otherwise the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated with their second choices being allocated to those remaining. This process is continued until a candidate receives 50% of the votes cast.
