On 1st November 2007 South Bucks District Council began a new refuse and recycling collection and street cleaning contract with Verdant Group Plc.  Our services changed slightly on this date and are explained further on this page and elsewhere in the waste and recycling section of this website.

South Buck District Council provides a property boundary refuse collection paper/card and glass/can recycling service to all domestic properties in the district.  It is also responsible for litter picking and mechanical sweeping of adopted roads and footpaths. The Council also runs various recycling initiatives including the provision of mini-recycling sites and discounted compost bins. Please contact the office on 01895 837362 for more details.

Domestic Refuse Collection Service

All refuse should be securely bagged and left at the property boundary by 7am to guarantee collection.  Your property boundary is where your front path or driveway meets the public pavement or road.  You may leave your refuse sacks in a bin.

Refuse Recycling
Household Waste-Domestic bins.
Currently SBDC does not provide domestic waste containers throughout the district. We are trialling a wheelie bin collection service to 5,400 homes. For the remaining properties our contractor Verdant Group Plc will deliver a 6 month supply of sacks in April and October each year.

Recycling Collection
Two types of containers are available to residents wishing to recycle paper/card, and glass/cans. These are colour coded - black for paper/card and green for glass/cans. Should you require either of these containers they may be obtained by using our feedback form or calling us on 01895 837362.

The following should not be put out for collection and alternative arrangements should be made:-

• Garden waste- residents should compost this themselves or take it to the local household waste sites for composting at the garden waste collection points. The Council’s contractors, Verdant Group Plc, will collect it for a small charge, please ring 01494 763085 for more details.
  

• Plumbing, building, DIY materials
  - including kitchen units and built-in wardrobes - residents should consult the Yellow Pages for the relevant services.
  
• Clinical waste,
  - such as colostomy bags and dialysis bags will be collected separately, free of charge. Special containers are provided. Residents should contact their G.P. or district nurse to arrange for this service. Collection and disposal of clinical waste is as identified by central government in its Safe Disposal of Clincial Waste (Health Advisory Committee 1999). This includes items such as surgical waste, used syringes.
  We will collect sharps boxes and the yellow clinical waste sacks currently on a Wednesday collection. However you will need to contact your G.P or District Nurse for the provision of your first week's sharps box/clinical waste sack.
  
• Commercial waste
  - is the responsibility of the trader or company concerned who should have a trade refuse agreement with a licensed waste disposal company.

In order to further reduce the demand on landfill, the Council provides numerous mini-recycling sites throughout the District as well as a front of property paper/card, glass/cans collection service - see under "Recycling" for more details.

• Bulky Collections
  Unwanted bulky household items e.g. fridges, freezers, beds etc. can be collected. This service costs £27.50 (including VAT) for up to 5 items unless certain benefits are claimed. The items will be collected within 14 days of payment. This does not include either house-clearances or building (including DIY) materials. The items must be left outside the house as the operatives are not insured to enter buildings.  Arrangements can be made to enter private property to remove items if required in certain circumstances. 
   
• Charitable use
  Many charities are interested in furniture and clothes which are in  good condition, to pass on to people who can make use of them. Residents should contact these organisations first before ringing the Council, because everything collected by the Council will go to landfill. PLEASE ENSURE your refuse bags, paper and recycling boxes are available for collection no later than 7a.m. on your collection day. Thank you.

If you have electrically operated gates, your refuse and recycling outside your the gate.

NOTE:  Garden waste will not be collected unless it is in green sacks, which may be obtained from Verdant Group Plc by contacting (01494) 763085. This is a direct arrangement between residents and Verdant Group Plc.  If you are on the Green Waste Trial you should disregard this.

Reducing household waste helps the environment by saving natural resources and reducing the amount of waste for disposal. Street Cleansing

• Mechanical Sweeping
  Mechanical Sweeping of road channels maintained at public expense are at least generally once every 4weeks.
  
• Litter
  The pavements and road edge on adopted roads are litter picked according to usage. Provided that the pavement is kerbed, the gutters are also mechanically swept. In all the main shopping centres, the pavements are litter picked five times a week and swept together with the gutter three times a week. The Council is also responsible for litter picking adopted roads and footpaths and mechanical sweeping of adopted roads.
  
• Litter bins & Dog Fouling Bins
  Litter Bins for which the District is responsible are emptied currently on a Tuesday and Friday. Any problems with a litter bin please call 01895 837362
  
• Fly-Tipping
  The unauthorised dumping of waste is illegal and can be potentially hazardous to the environment. However, it is a growing problem and a drain on local authority finances. Sightings of such incidents should be reported to the Council with any relevant details, such as the time of the incident, registration and make of the vehicle. A formal statement is required and this may help lead towards a prosecution. Responsibility for clearance and disposal of fly-tipping depends on its location as follows:-

• waste fly-tipped on private land is the responsibility of the landowner.
• waste fly-tipped on highway verges, lay byes or partially blocking footpaths, is the responsibility of the District Council (Tel: 01895 837362).
• where the fly-tipping is on the public highway or is blocking a footpath then the County Council should be contacted (Tel: 0845 2302882)
