Asbestos

Asbestos was extensively used as a building material in the UK and is found in many buildings built between 1950 and 1980 and is found in many everyday items. Although its use in building materials has not been permitted since the mid 1980's asbestos is still a major cause of deaths and ill-health related to work, at least 3500 people die in the UK each year as a result of mesothelioma and asbestos related lung cancer as a result of past exposure to asbestos.

Many of these deaths are as a result of historic exposure however currently the highest risk of exposure lies with workers involved in the refurbishment, repair or maintenance of buildings - such as plumbers, carpenters and electricians. Asbestos may still be present in older buildings, insulation material and is still used in some brake pads and clutch encountered during vehicle servicing and repair. If you work with asbestos, come into contact with it as a result of repair and maintenance work, or are simply concerned that your property may retain features incorporating asbestos containing materials you should exercise caution and seek advice regarding its handling.
