Wheelie Bin and Caddy Liners

Many residents prefer to wrap food waste in newspaper because it is cheap and absorbs moisture and odour.

Unfortunately not all bags or liners that are biodegradable are OK to compost. Caddy liners/bags need to be of a certain standard to meet the requirements of the composting facility where your waste is sent. Fully biodegradable liners are made from corn starch (or other crop derived sources) and polylactic acid, and are designed to biodegrade in home or industrial composting conditions. These liners will be completely consumed by micro-organisms in the food chain and are 100% compostable and biodegradable.

Other ‘degradable’ liners are still made from oil derived plastic which will disintegrate eventually but this can take months or years, surviving the composting process and causing contamination. Green waste from your green bin is sent to a composting facility in High Wycombe and the compost made is used on gardens, parks, farmland and landscaping throughout Buckinghamshire. Contamination from plastic bags and unsuitable caddy liners can cause problems and look unsightly when compost is spread into the land.

What liners should I use for my caddy or green bin?
Only liners that show the following symbols are compatible with the composting process and the symbols should be visible on the liner for our operatives to see.
