Heatwave Advice

Heatwaves are measured on a scale of 1 - 4: Level 1 being the lowest and Level 4 being the most severe.

The probability of Level 3 heatwave conditions in Southeast England between 10.00 on Tuesday 25th July and 08.00 on Friday 28th July is 100%

Hot conditions are expected to develop across many central and southern areas on Tuesday with a muggy night to follow. On Wednesday the extreme heat will be more limited in extent, with southeastern parts again seeing very high temperatures. Consequently this is where the highest risk of heatwave conditions exists. Thunderstorms will introduce a respite with less-hot weather spreading to all parts from the west by the end of the week.

With most schools now on holiday it is very important to take care with young children, as well as the elderly, in this extreme heat. If there is anyone you know who might be at special risk, for example an older person living on their own, make sure they know what to do. In particular:

Keep out of the heat:
  • Try and plan your day in a way that allows you to stay out of the heat.
  • If you can, avoid going out in the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm).
  • If you can't avoid strenuous outdoor activity, like sport, DIY, or gardening, keep it for cooler parts of the day, like early morning.
  • If you must go out, stay in the shade. Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothes. If you'll be outside for some time, take plenty of water with you and use a high factor sun cream ideally at least Factor 15 for Adults and Factor 50 for children.
Stay cool:

  • Stay inside, in the coolest rooms in your home, as much as possible.
  • Close the curtains in rooms that get a lot of sun.
  • Keep windows closed while the room is cooler than it is outside. Open them when the temperature inside rises, and at night for ventilation.
  • Take a cool showers or baths.
Drink regularly:

  • Drink regularly even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol as they can cause dehydration.
  • Eat as you normally would and try to eat more cold food, particularly salads and fruit, which contain water.
  • Advice on how to reduce the risk, either for yourself or somebody you know, can be obtained from NHS Direct or on 0845 4647, or from your local pharmacist, or doctor.
