Parks and Open Spaces
There are some particularly fine parks and open spaces that have been created over the last 400 years and these attract thousands of visitors each year.
South Bucks also has a wealth of historic gardens, many built to take advantage of the attractive countryside within easy reach of London and the Royal Court. Existing Tudor and Stuart parks and gardens such as Huntercombe, Bulstrode and Langley Park were remodelled in the Georgian period in the fashionable English landscape style.
The above parks are just some of the areas that make up the rich wealth of parks in South Bucks. Alongside these are the great estates of Stoke Park and Cliveden.
These were joined in the late Georgian and Victorian periods by estates created from areas of former commons, heaths and woodland such as at Heatherden Hall, St Huberts and Dropmore. From the Victorian period onwards much smaller gardens attached to villas were created such as Berry Hill, Nashdom, Denham Mount and Fulmer Grange.
There are also seven sites designated “sites of special scientific interest” within the District including Littleworth Common which is managed by the Council and Stoke Common which is owned and managed by the corporation of London.
Not only do they these areas enhance the quality of our District they are also of historical importance and include the work of many of the most important and influential figures in the history of garden design including Henry Wise, Charles Bridgeman, Lancelot "Capability Brown", Humphrey Repton, Gertrude Jekyll, Edward Lutyens, William Eden and Susan Jellicoe.
There are numerous private and proprietary golf clubs in and around the area. The District is also home to Farnham Park Golf Course, probably one of the best public courses in the South of England, and The Lanes Golf Course. Both owned and managed by South Bucks District Council.
Both these golf courses offer great value for money, and are open to the public as Pay and Play facilities. Farnham Park Golf Course, is a challenging 18 hole Colt/Hawtree course set in 130 acres of attractive and mature wooded parkland. Tee reservations can be booked up to 10 days in advance, while the purchase of an advanced annual booking card permits the holder to book 12 days in advance. The Lanes Golf Course is a 9 Hole Academy course on the edge of Stoke Poges and is the ideal family golf centre, suitable for everyone, from the novice golfer to the more experienced player.
Situated near to Farnham Park Golf Course is Farnham Park Playing Fields an attractive area of 88 acres and provides the opportunity for numerous sports to be played including football, rugby and cricket. The playing fields also host other major events including an annual softball competition.
