Holtspur And Burnham Youth Go Beyond Rowing
Young people from Burnham and Holtspur will be among the first to benefit from the South Bucks 2012 Games Action Plan as they take part in the Beyond Rowing project, a ten week programme designed to tackle anti-social behaviour by promoting the importance of healthy living and achievement both inside and outside sport.
The project is run by South Bucks District Council in partnership with the River and Rowing Museum at Henley, Eton College Dorney Lake, and Burnham and Holtspur Youth Clubs. It will promote the importance of healthy living and physical activity, as well as inspiring the young people to reach their goals by giving them strong role models who show what can be achieved with determination and self-belief.
The project starts on June 15th, and the ten weeks will include talks from elite sports people, including an Olympian and a representative from 100% Me, an organisation which promotes drug-free sport and personal responsibility, values, choice and fairness, as well as team building sessions and visiting a top rowing club. Participants will also get involved in physical activity on ergo rowing machines, capsize drills, and dragon boating, leading up to a rowing session on the Olympic venue at Dorney Lake.
South Bucks District Councillor Shorne Tilbey, Portfolio Holder for Community, says, 'South Bucks District Council, as a host district for the London 2012 Games, has a unique opportunity to use the Olympics to inspire our young people to achieve their ambitions, sporting or otherwise. Projects such as Beyond Rowing will have a lasting impact on the young people and communities involved.'
