Don't Forget To Compost This Autumn
Now that autumn has well and truly set in, South Bucks District Council is urging residents to compost their peelings and any uncooked leftovers after indulging in the fruits and vegetables of the season.
There are many ways you can start composting at home, you don't even need a special compost bin. All you need is a little space in the back garden and some vegetable and / or fruit peelings, grass cuttings and hedge trimmings, or even shredded paper and cardboard to start your own compost heap.
If you're wondering what to do with all those autumn leaves you rake up this season, why not try composting them? Leaves and plants killed by frost, fruit and vegetable scraps and the last grass cuttings of the year can all be composted. But it's not just garden waste that can be recycled in this way, egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds, sawdust and shredded paper can also all be added to your compost heap.
For residents who have never composted before, there has never been a better time to start. Compost takes around six to nine months until it is ready to use, so start composting now and come spring you will have nutrient rich, organic compost to add to your borders, lawns and spring bulbs to help them bloom.
The Council is committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and is eager to encourage residents to do the same. Composting at home is a great way of reducing harmful CO2 and methane emissions that can contribute to climate change. It saves on fuel transporting garden waste to Household Waste Recycling Centres, and prevents waste that would otherwise be thrown in the bin from being sent to landfill.
South Bucks District Council's Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Bill Lidgate, says, "Autumn is a great time to get composting as we all tend to have a clear-up in our gardens before winter sets in. Nearly 30% of the waste we throw away can be composted. It's easy to do and can make a big difference to our environment and to your garden. "
