Recycling On The Go

Over the next few weeks South Bucks residents and visitors will be able to recycle a range of materials while they are out and about in the District.

A new initiative has been launched by South Bucks District Council to encourage people to help the environment by tidily disposing of their empty drinks cans and plastic bottles in the new on-street recycling bins. 13 special bins with separate slots for mixed paper and card, drink cans, food tins and plastic bottles and litter are being installed in convenient town and village centre locations.

They are the first on-street recycling facilities to be provided in the district and will compliment the districts already successful kerbside recycling and network of local bring centres which are all part of the Council's ongoing efforts to further increase South Bucks' already impressive recycling rates.

Most householders are now separating their recycling at home and have already proved that they are committed to living in a greener district by helping divert from landfill over 34% of the waste collected in 2008. It is hoped that by installing these new bins residents will extend this good practise on to the street and will help South Bucks reach its challenging recycling target of 40% by 2010.

South Bucks District Council's Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Bill Lidgate said: "The introduction of these recycling-litter bins means it is now almost as easy for people to recycle when out shopping as it is at home. South Bucks residents already recycle over a third of their waste and we are always looking to introduce ways to help residents recycle more. Putting newspapers, magazines, cans and plastic bottles in the correct bin allows them to be recycled rather than landfilled. Introducing recycling-litter bins is another way we are improving our environment."

"The Council is installing over 300 new litter bins throughout the district. These two initiatives should help to reduce the amount of litter in our district and the associated costs with clearing it which our residents tell us is very important to them. The Council spends nearly £1 million a year of your money on picking up litter and sweeping roads, so if you cannot see a litter bin, please take your litter home with you."
