South Bucks Residents Celebrate London 2012
Local residents of all ages embraced new activities as they took part in the South Bucks Open Weekend on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend – a national celebration marking the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The free taster sessions were co-ordinated by South Bucks District Council, in partnership with several local sports clubs. Over 130 children and adults had fun sampling the sports on offer. As well as giving residents new opportunities to be active, local sports clubs may have found the next world champion and unleashed their talent in the sports of rowing, kick boxing, football, golf and bowls.
Councillor Shorne Tilbey, South Bucks District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community, says, ‘It is great to see so many members of our local community joining with the Council and sports clubs in celebrating the countdown to the London 2012 Games. The next two years will be an exciting time for South Bucks and we look forward to providing even more opportunities to help inspire residents to participate in sport and to lead a healthy lifestyles in the run up to the Games.’
If you missed out on the weekend activities there is still a chance to experience the sports that were on offer at the Open Weekend. The Lanes golf course & driving range welcomes players of all ages and skills, lessons are available from PGA qualified professionals and a brand new state of the art floodlit driving range is open until 8pm all year round.
Maidenhead Rowing Club are also keen to welcome new members, the club caters to all levels of rowing from recreational through to competitive, and courses are available to new rowers. For more information about Maidenhead Rowing Club visit www.maidenheadrc.org.uk
Another local club keen to welcome new members is Denham Bowls Club. Lawn bowls is a precision sport that is played for the challenge and competition, personal enjoyment, physical activity, the pleasure of spending time outdoors and for social interaction... so it offers something for everyone!
