Olympic Star Shines on South Bucks Young People

Last week young people from South Bucks took part in a taster riding day at the South Bucks Riding for the Disabled site in Fulmer. On hand was Paralympian Sophie Christianson who achieved a Gold Medal at the Beijing Games.

Sophie circulated several of her medals to the riders as well as providing encouragement the riders, several of whom were having their first experience of horse riding. Sophie’s Coach and stable manager, Clive Milkins, assisted along with Di Redfern, Chairman of the South Bucks RDA group and several of the group’s volunteers.

The young people, who have physical and/or learning disabilities, had an exciting time riding in different settings from a large arena to a woodland area before finishing with some fun games on a specially designed ‘interactive’ area.

As a 2012 Host Council South Bucks District Council are striving to provide a lasting legacy in the lead up to the Games by delivering Olympic activities including school trips to Olympic sites, sporting competitions, educational trips to museums and inspirational talks delivered by Olympians and Paralympians.

Joe Sammon, Sports Development Officer said, “South Bucks is very fortunate to have the Riding for the Disabled venue in its area and the Council were delighted to receive excellent feedback on the day from the children and their parents”.
