Sites on Olympics for South Bucks school children.
Last week over 80 school children from South Bucks schools visited the 2012 Olympic Park as part of South Bucks District Council’s local Olympic plan.
Each junior and secondary school in the district was invited to select children to attend one of the three days available for the trips. The days started with a talk at Dorney lake followed by tours of the Lee Valley White Water and Athletics Centres before going on to get a unique view of the Olympic Park from ground level at the ‘View Tube’ and a view across the whole park from the 22nd floor of a nearby apartment block.
At the Athletics Centre several of the children had the opportunity to meet and chat with Long Jumper Chris Tomlinson, Bronze Medal winner at the 2010 European Championships, as well as the fantastic opportunity to watch the ‘Blade Runner’, Oscar Pistorius, complete a ‘race speed’ circuit of the track.
District Councillor Anita Cranmer, Portfolio Holder for Community, said, “The children had a fantastic day; getting a real sense of the huge scale of the Games, they were also able to hear talks and ask questions from representatives at each of the venues”.
As a 2012 Host Council South Bucks District Council is striving to provide a lasting legacy in the lead up to the Games by delivering Olympic activities including school trips to Olympic sites, sporting competitions, educational trips to museums and inspirational talks delivered by Olympians and Paralympians.
