South Bucks Sports Heroes Receive Bucks Sports Awards
Sporting heroes from South Bucks, who have made an outstanding contribution to their local community, came together last week for a celebratory evening at Horwood House in Buckinghamshire. The prestigious Bucks Sport Awards presented by Zac Purchase MBE, Olympic Gold Medallist, is organised each year by Bucks Sport with the assistance of local authorities from Buckinghamshire.
Of the nine Bucks Sport Awards, which each reflect the wide ranging impact that sport can have on people and their community, a third were awarded to sports stars from South Bucks. South Bucks nominees were successful in the Young Leader of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and School of the Year categories.
South Bucks District Councillor Anita Cranmer, Portfolio Holder for Community, said, “These successes highlight the large number of individuals in South Bucks who provide a great service, often in a voluntary capacity, to their local community”.
This year's 'Volunteer of the Year' was awarded to Julia Wilson from Beaconsfield, who has greatly boosted participant numbers during her long term involvement with Gerrards Cross Hockey Club.
The 'Young Leader of the Year' title was awarded to Ellen Richmond, from Gerrards Cross, who volunteers both at school and in the community and has been team leader to the Clan Netball Club, leading their Under 14 Junior Team to victory in the winter 2010 League.
The prestigious title of ‘School of the Year’ was awarded to The Stoke Poges School whose Ofsted report shows it provides ‘outstanding provision’ in sport and in such unique ways that it’s PE Co-ordinator was recently invited to speak at the National Conference on PE at the Brit Oval.
Other nominees who fully deserve a mention for their sterling work are unsung hero Di Redfern, Trustee of the South Bucks Riding for the Disabled Centre in Fulmer, volunteer Callum Rose from Beaconsfield, Alfriston School in Knotty Green and young leader Edward Dodd from Gerrards Cross.
South Bucks District Council would like to congratulate all the winners and nominees for their outstanding achievements.
