Call for Young South Bucks Athletes to Claim Training Grants
Young talented athletes from South Bucks are being encouraged to apply for a series of financial and training grants offered by the GLL Sport Foundation of which local sports provider Nexus Community is a division. Athletes have until 13th February 2011 to apply for a share of a £400,000 fund, which the Foundation plans to invest in sporting hopefuls over the next year.
Successful applicants will benefit either from funding of up to £1,500 to be spent on training, travel and equipment during the next 12 months, or from training awards that allow free sporting access to more than 78 sports facilities managed by not-for-profit leisure operator GLL or its partners including Nexus Community.
South Bucks District Councillor Shorne Tilbey, Portfolio Holder for Community says, “It’s fantastic to see opportunities that support training, equipment and travel for our young gifted and talented athletes.”
To be eligible for a grant, sportsmen and women must reside or have a training base in the South East areas in which GLL and Nexus Community operate, and must have the long-term potential to succeed at International level. Nexus Community manage both the Beacon Centre at Beaconsfield and the Evreham Sports Centre in Iver on behalf of South Bucks District Council meaning that local young people in South Bucks are eligible to apply.
Since its launch in 2008 the Foundation has supported nearly 2,000 young UK athletes across 50 Olympic, Paralympic, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sports with training grants worth well over £1 million. It is hoped that a further 1000 young sportsmen and women will be helped during 2011.
