Golden Day For South Bucks At Youth Games

The sun was shining on South Bucks at the weekend as the district’s sports teams won two golds and two silvers at the annual Bucks Youth Games; the largest one-day youth multisport event in Bucks.

The 500 strong event proved worthy of its prestigious London 2012 Inspire Mark status with supporters rewarded for their appreciation of the event by an appearance from Mandeville; the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascot.

Young people from South Bucks competed against teams representing Aylesbury, Chiltern, Milton Keynes and Wycombe in athletics, football, netball, tag rugby and swimming. South Bucks retained the netball gold and, in a joint swimming team with Chiltern, they also retained the gold they had achieved at the 2010 Games. Second places were also secured by the district in the Disability Sport and Athletics Year 7 events.

South Bucks District Councillor Anita Cranmer, Portfolio Holder for Community says, “It’s fantastic to see another successful year for the teams representing South Bucks at the Bucks Youth Games. The event provides a great opportunity for athletes who are just starting out in their chosen sport to compete and experience a major sporting event.”

South Bucks District Council’s Sports Development Team would like to thank all the competitors, parents, team managers, clubs and schools for their help in making the day such an enjoyable and successful experience.

Preparation for the games usually begins in October, with each district planning festivals in connection with schools and local clubs to select squads for each sport to represent the district. Squads are then provided with several weeks of training leading up to the games to prepare them for the competition. Following the event, competitors are 'signposted' to local clubs in their area in order that they can continue in their chosen sport.
