Health Protection Agency Reviews Tesco Report

The Health Protection Agency has recently undertaken a review into the environmental health risks posed by the use of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) stored at the Tesco's Gerrards Cross site and nearby railway siding.

South Bucks District Council asked the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to review the findings of a report by Dr. Acton which was commissioned by Tesco on the 24th May 2007, looking into the storage and use of the IBAA. The original report outlined the health impacts of the IBAA material on the site of the stalled development over the railway in Gerrards Cross, and considered its continued use as a building material within the project.

South Bucks District Council welcomes the fact that the Health Protection Agency are supportive of the conclusions reached by Dr Acton's report which was originally commissioned to address local concerns of the District Council and local residents. Whilst the HPA do not identify any risks to the health of those living locally from the presence or use of the material on site, the importance of controlling dust during any further construction works has been highlighted. Environmental Health staff at South Bucks District Council are already liaising directly with the contractors, on site, to ensure appropriate measures are taken regarding dust control. Regular monitoring visits are also undertaken to verify the condition of the site, further monitoring inspections of the site will be undertaken should work recommence.

Councillor Jennifer Woolveridge, Portfolio Holder for Health and Housing commented "We welcome the comments received from the Health Protection Agency and the advice it has provided. The Council regards the protection of the health and wellbeing of residents near to this development as paramount. Officers from our Environmental Health Unit are continuing to actively monitor the progress of this project".
