"No Doorstep Selling Zone" To Fight Doorstep Crime

Denham is to become a ‘No Doorstep Selling Zone’ on 18th November following an initiative run by agencies in the South Bucks Community Safety Partnership to help combat distraction burglaries and the presence of rogue traders at residents’ properties.

South Bucks District Council Community's Safety Team is working together with Thames Valley Police, Neighbourhood Watch and Trading Standards to reduce distraction burglaries and rogue traders across the District.

South Bucks District Councillor Shorne Tilbey, Portfolio Holder for Community, says "If we are to tackle this crime effectively, then it is crucial that all concerned work together - many other organisations, not just the police, can make a valuable contribution. I believe that with a commitment to long-term co-operation, and sharing of ideas and resources, there is a real prospect of addressing this type of crime."

'No Doorstep Selling Zones' can be recognised by visibly mounted sign at the end of a road and door stickers being displayed by residents to deter the rogue trader or distraction burglar. Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be assisting with the project by carrying out hi-visibility patrols and delivering community safety advice to residents in the zones. Crime prevention information is given to the residents living in the designated zone.

Distraction burglaries and rogue trading often involves highly practiced criminals abusing the trust of victims, usually older or lone residents, on whom the effect can be considerable, in terms not just of the financial loss but also the immediate emotional harm and subsequent loss of quality of life.

The distraction burglar often uses various techniques to distract people to enable them to get into their home and commit a burglary. They often deceive the resident by pretending to be traders or utility officials. Distraction burglars are also known as, 'bogus callers' or 'con artists'.

Remember genuine callers will not usually mind waiting whilst you confirm that they are legitimate. Remember local authority services will make an appointment in advance before calling and utility companies operate a password scheme. So if you are elderly and somebody calls without an appointment, you can always ask them to call back at another time when you can have somebody with you. If you do not have a door chain or door bar you should have one fitted as this will act as a barrier when talking to unexpected visitors and is highly recommended.
