SBDC, in conjunction with the Royal Mail's Postcode Centre, administers the naming of new development streets, and oversees the allocation and changes to postal addresses.
New Developments
There is a statutory procedure for naming new streets. Developers involved in new construction projects may use a marketing name for their own purposes, but this does not necessarily become the official street name.
The process involves consultation with local Parish Council's and emergency services, and requires the posting of a notice near the site entrance for 21 days, during which time objections will be considered. It is after this process when the street name becomes official.
Street naming is a lengthy process, and therefore developers are requested to contact us at the earliest opportunity. From April 2007 this service is subject to a an administration charge of £60 per unit.
Street Numbering
New properties, and on occasions existing un-numbered properties, are allocated postal numbers. It is the Council's Policy that this is adhered to wherever practicable.
Whilst it is useful to aid the delivery process for the Royal Mail and other organisations, the primary reason for individuals to use and display the number of their property is to ensure that the emergency services can find an address quickly and easily at any time of day or night. Sadly, occasions have occurred where emergency services have failed to reach an emergency due to the absence of a number displayed on a property.
Property naming
Use of property names is accepted, and welcomed when used in conjunction with the official postal number, and of course, the postcode.
